Updated: Gas Fireplace Ignites St. Paul House Fire
Updated at 11:30 a.m.: St. Paul Fire Marshal Steve Zaccard reports that the fire was caused by a gas fireplace in the basement of the home, not a wood stove as we originally reported.
It is believed that a wood burning stove started a St. Paul house fire just after noon Monday.
Firefighters were called to 1655 Fernwood St.about 12:30 p.m.
Engines 18, 22 and Ladder 22 arrived to find smoke showing from the one-story dwelling.
Engine 22 stretched an attack line into the basement and Engine 18 brought a line to the first floor. Ladder 22 assumed search duties.
Engine 5 secured a water supply and then backed up Engine 18 on the first floor. Squad 1 brought a backup line to the basement.
Crews reported that fire burned through the floor of the A/D corner of the home.
The fire was placed under control about 12:55.

This is my sisters house. The only thing I would like to say is that it was not a wood burning stove but a gas fireplace. Thank you
Looks like a good stop!
Really nice photos. Thanks.
Glad to see at least the third due engine (fourth due vehicle with a pump) went for water supply – and that the hydrant wasn’t frozen.
