June 8 – Firefighters were called to a small house fire in Cottage Grove around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Crews were dispatched to 8351 Hyde Ct. for a report of smoke and flames from the roof of a home.

When police arrived, they reported smoke from the eaves of the one-story home. Fire units found flames and smoke from the rear on their arrival.

The fire started in an electric ventilation fan in the attic.

“The fan was probably running all day because of the high heatand overheated,” Cottage Grove Fire Chief Bob Byerly told Twin Cities Fire Wire.

Firefighters on the roof opened the area around the fan to check for extension. Crews doused the flames with a water extinguisher.

Damage was limited to the attic and roof around the fan.

This fire was a block away from Monday’s house fire on Hyde Avenue.

The units were released about 2 a.m.

June 6 – Firefighters from the South metro worked to contain a house fire in Cottage Grove on Monday afternoon.

Cottage Grove crews were called to 8255 Hyde Ave. just at 3:53 p.m. The initial call reported flames from the back of a home.

Ladder 26 arrived to find heavy fire on the B and C sides of the two-story, split-level home on arrival. The crew stretched a 1 3/4-inch hoseline through the front door to the second floor.

“They did not encounter very much smoke, but they had a good amount of heat,” Deputy Chief Rick Redenius told Twin Cites Fire Wire. He said they opened the ceiling and found a heavy volume of fire traveling through the attic area.

“Command saw that the roof was starting to fail under heavy fire conditions, so we pulled the crew out and went to a defensive attack.”

Firefighters on Engine 25 deployed a 1 3/4-inch hoseline to the rear of the home. A 2 1/2-inch hoseline was pulled to the B-side to douse the fire that was burning through the attic.

Once the fire was knocked down, crews moved back to the interior of the home.

Redenius said the back of the home was destroyed and the second floor of the home suffered extensive damage.

As firefighters went about their duties on the scene, temperatures reached 95 degrees. Crews were cycled through rehab with water and wet towels.

“Our chiefs and safety officers were keeping an eye out for any firefighters who looked distressed,” said Redenius. No injuries were reported.

The fire was placed under control in about 45 minutes.

The cause of the fire is under investigation but police and fire officials, but it appeared to start near the back deck of the home, according to Redenius.

Firefighters from Newport, Saint Paul Park and Woodbury were called to assist Cottage Grove crews.

May 13 – Cottage Grove firefighters doused a smoky basement fire on Friday afternoon.

Fire crews were called to the 8700 block of Ivywood Avenue around 3:30 for a report of flames coming from the closet in a bedroom.

Cottage Grove Ladder 26 found heavy smoke from the two-story, split-level home when they arrived. The occupants had escaped the home.

Deputy Chief Rick Redenuis arrived moments later and he told Twin Cities fire that the window in the fire room failed and flames were now showing from the lower level room.

The crew from Ladder 26 deployed a 1 3/4-inch hoseline through the garage into the home. Engine 45 stretched a backup line.

Redenuis said that crews encountered extremely high heat conditions as they made their way into the basement.

The fire was knocked down in about 10 minutes.

Crews performed ventilation on both levels of the home and the thick brown smoke pushed from the upper level for a few minutes.

Mutual aid was called from St. Paul Park.

Firefighters removed much of the area around the fire room windows on the exterior to check for extension. The aerial from Ladder 26 was used to check for extension along the top of the home.

Redenuis said the basement suffered heavy heat damage and the entire home suffered smoke damage.
