The fire quickly spread through the top floor of the building and consumed the attic.

At least one aerial ladder was flowing a master stream and several hoselines surrounding the building poured water on to the flames.

Deputy Chief Kip told the Star Tribune that investigators will be on the scene of an extended period of time. The paper also reports that complex staff has assisted the residents find shelter this evening.

Mutual aid was received from Brooklyn Park, Excelsior, Hamel, Minnetonka, Rogers, Wayzata and West Metro, according to local media.

Coon Rapids firefighters were evacuated from a second floor room just a minute before the floor they were operating on collapsed on Sunday. The resident of the home was transported to a local hospital.

Coon Rapids crews were called to the two-story home at 10830 Grouse St. at 2:40 p.m. Engines 1 and 3 responded. Rescue 2, who just went in service from an accident scene, also responded. As they responded to the scene, several 9-1-1 calls were being received and crews could see smoke in the area.

Engine 1, with Captain Tim Gilsrud in command, arrived to find heavy fire from the attic of the garage attached to the two-story, split-level home. The fire was licking the side of the home, having breached the attic space. The siding on the D-exposure house was already melting.

“The garage roof had already collapsed into the garage itself,” Gilsrud told Twin Cities Fire Wire. “I have not really seen fire that far advanced that the roof’s collapsed on arrival.”

While Engine 11 assumed command and secured a water supply, Rescue 2’s crew stretched a 2 1/2-inch hoseline to the front of the home. They held the fire from the exposure and worked to knock down the heavy volume of fire in the garage.

“We needed to get into the attic to stop the spread,” Gilsrud said.

Engine 3’s crew stretched a 1 1/2-inch hoseline to the second floor. Crews were opening up the ceiling to access the attic space from the kitchen on the C/D corner of the home.

Gilsrud says that conditions were getting worse and he decided it was time to pull crews out.

“About a minute after we evacuated the house, the kitchen floor collapsed into the lower level,” according to Gilsrud. “We later found the kitchen table in the basement.

Crews regrouped outside the home and worked to knock down the fire as it took possession of the home.

Andover Engine 11 responded to the scene to assist crews with the extensive overhaul operations.

Allina EMS crews transported the resident of the home to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The damage left the home uninhabitable.
